St. Vincent
St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) was a priest of the Catholic Church who dedicated himself to serving the poor. A man of deep faith, keen intellect, and enormous creativity, he has become known as "The Apostle of Charity" and "Father of the Poor."
Who We Are
The local Society was established in 1980 at St. Mary. Since 1994 membership has included all three parishes in Muncie.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide Catholic community organization founded in Paris in 1833. Locally, we are a tri-parish group of adults that serves the needy of Delaware County.
The vocation of the Society’s members, who are called Vincentians, is to follow Christ through service to those in need and bear witness to His compassionate and liberating love. Members show their commitment through person-to-person contact. Vincentians serve in hope. The purpose of the Vincentians is to fulfill 2 great commandments – Love of God and Love of Neighbor.
No work of charity is foreign to the Society. It includes any form of help that alleviates suffering or deprivation and promotes human dignity and personal integrity in all their dimensions.
Vincentians strive to seek out and find those in need and the forgotten, the victims of exclusion or adversity. Persons to be aided are met on an equal basis at their level – never looked down on and always with the thought that they are our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ.
There are over 4,600 Saint Vincent de Paul communities worldwide with 172,000 members. Each decides which services work best for the community in which they live and serve.
